The Narrative Kill Chain: An Engineered Cognitive Sequence
In the cognitive attack framework outlined in our report – The Role of Deepfakes in Cognitive Warfare, the Narrative Kill Chain refers to a structured and repeatable sequence of narratives intended to produce predictable cognitive effects on a target population.
Conflicts in the modern day information space respect neither borders nor time zones. The same disinformation narrative can be adapted and deployed across continents in parallel, whether the objective is to interfere with an election, erode social cohesion, or destabilize public trust in institutions.
Geography is no longer a constraint — only the capacity to produce and distribute content is, and it’s that dependency on connectivity and scale that places this form of cognitive warfare squarely in the digital domain. But with technology advancing at rapid pace, even these perceived constraints are defined as a playbook and attack framework, enabling AI-powered cognitive weapons to be deployed smoothly and effectively by threat actors large and small.

What is the Narrative Kill Chain?
In this context, the term kill chain is used in its doctrinal, non-kinetic sense. Rather than describing a sequence intended to destroy physical targets, the Narrative Kill Chain refers to a structured and repeatable arrangement of content fragments designed to produce predictable cognitive effects on a target.
The objective of this sequence is not persuasion to an agenda or stimulation of belief, but the progressive erosion of morale, trust, agency, and meaning, ultimately leading to psychological disengagement and eventually, compliance. Each phase in the chain prepares the conditions for the next. The full effect does not require exposure to a single comprehensive narrative, but instead emerges cumulatively, over time, channels, and repeated encounters with different content fragments.
This approach is consistent with modern cognitive warfare doctrine, in which influence is achieved by shaping internal states rather than asserting verifiable claims.
As part of our investigation for this report, which included an analysis of over 1,000 videos, we identified a core dataset of around 60 deepfake videos, which serve as prime examples of the six phases observed in the Narrative Kill Chain.
Influence Levers in Cognitive Weapons
To explain how cognitive weapons are used to shape internal states in the target population through each phase in the kill chain, each ‘weapon’ – the deepfake video, in this case, has it’s own payload, with three influence levers or affectors:
- Intent: The intended message of the emotional shaping. In phase one, for example, the intent is to create a manufactured identity relatable to the viewer, such as a front line soldier.
- Cognitive effect: The mental impact of the message. In phase one, for example, this relatable identity lowers skepticism over the content of the message in the viewer.
- What is degraded: How certain attributes are affected. In phase one, for example, the relatability and reduced skepticism mean critical thinking is degraded, so the content becomes more acceptable.
Over time, and through exposure to different videos from different stages, psychological engagement is worn down. Let’s go into the detail of the affectors for each phase of the Narrative Kill Chain:

The Narrative Kill Chain
A Kill Chain – Not Isolated Propaganda
When observed in isolation, it’s possible to accept the videos exposed in our research as random or chaotic propaganda. Indeed, this is by design. It was only by analyzing thousands of videos harvested by our Threat Intelligence team that we were able to identify the patterns of recurring narrative stages, and expose the systematic approach designed to attack the viewer’s emotional state.
The attack framework reveals:
- Recurring narrative stages
- Consistent emotional progression
- Modular reuse of narrative components
- Predictable sequencing across distribution platforms
Individual videos typically perform one function within the broader sequence, with each video occupying a specific position in the chain. Exposure over time to multiple videos from the same and different phases completes the cognitive process.
